    To take one look at my bike, a would be thief would have to be desperate to steal it. it was 500 new, but that was a long time ago, and all the rust makes it less tempting to steal, but the secret is in all that rust and wear and tear, its is a well maintained bike, and like triggers broom, apart from the frame, everything has been replaced at least once. it still cycles like new, but no one but he desperate fool is going to steal it. that been said, a good quality U lock through the back wheel, and a chain lock through the front!!

    I haven't had any HUGE issues with this lock yet! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfyHDlEqk6hqu9acdvK5NGzZsGKSokSbv It seems sturdy and like it will get the job done. I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!

    Safe place to lock your bicycle, No road taxes, change the stupid law for electric bicycle which says if you use throttle you're classified to MVP there are people like for example me which have bicycle and my bicycle it's limited to 25 km 🤷 not anyone it's able to buy bicycle for €4,000 which have special pedal assists. Hire are people who have problems with legs and also would like to cycling, fix the roads from potholes. Not to 15min City's. And remove the stupid gates from park's which are totaly useless and only annoying anyone. Then people's probably change the habits and start cycling. And also change the speed limit 25km to 30km for electric bicycle but not for electric scooters. Typical kovalski cycling around 35km to 40km faster than the 25km on nonelectric bicycle 🤷

    I've tried to swap all my short car rides for bike rides. It's healthier, more fun and it lifts my mood. I can't ever remember actually enjoying driving a car - traffic sucks and they're fairly disconnected from the outside world! With the improvements to bike infrastructure I can even bring my kids with me on routes with protected bike infrastructure which is more fun than having them bored out of their minds in the back of the car. Turns out a bike is also a better way to commute than using my old motorbike. The motorbike was / is fun but it sucks getting struck in traffic and competing for space. I suggest any of those complaining about bikes to just give it a try. You might even like it.

    Safety is one of the reasons why I rarely cycle now but a huge reason is slow to change traffic lights. Even pedestrians are going mad waiting at lights. If they change every few seconds thats good for cyclists, good for pedestrians and bad for cars. If an elderly person is crossing while the lights change others must wait. Smart lights would also help.

    Nice to see someone in Ireland pointing this out. But I think there's more reason than just safety when it comes to choosing not to cycle in Ireland. Because so few people cycle, there aren't that many GOOD bikes available on the used market, meaning if people endeavor to try it out, it involves buying a decent new bike at full price (or some shite from Smyths Toys). Then there's also the issue of reputation and clout. People in Ireland love their cars. It's a status symbol, and for many is the most valuable thing they own. I moved from Co. Clare to Germany 3 years ago, and when people hear I now ride a bike instead of drive a fancy Audi like I did in Ireland, it's like they are confused and feel sorry for me. People just don't get it, in the mind of the average Irishman bikes are a toy for children and nothing more. The only way cycling is going to take off in Ireland is if the stigma were to somehow reverse, like maybe bikes became super trendy... I guess Conor McGregor would have to start riding around on a Grifter or something, then all the 'lads' would follow suit.

    • @davidkelly0

      Before the 1970s, The Netherlands wasn't the cycling paradise we know it as today (granted it was still safer than anywhere else at the time). But it really wasn't until the 70s when the Dutch government saw too many pedestrians and cyclists being killed by cars on their roads. Their government then made a decision to legislate for bike lanes and footpaths to be wide, and protected by curbs. They were motivated by reducing fatalities - not by worrying about the status symbols of the middle class. And it has paid off beautifully imo. I visited Amsterdam for the first time this year and I've never felt so safe as a cyclist. It was like a dream. But back to Dublin. Once cycling becomes more accessible to everyone, I'm sure the bike market will naturally blossom in proportion. Not to mention that you can already buy multiple new bikes for the cost of an average car. (Also without the added cost of fuel, road tax, insurance, getting a license, etc.) If people can afford a gas guzzling car, they can afford a bike. No question. I understand cars can be useful for longer journeys sometimes, but there's really no excuse for so many cars in the city centre, this video really gets that point across too. And yes, I respect your opinion. While there does seem to be a stigma around cycling in Ireland, there won't be if it becomes the norm. Peace ✌️

    i don't agree with spending only 10% of the value of the bike some people buy one second hand or in sale my bike was under £300 so he's saying i should only spend £27 on my lock which would be a crappy u lock; That wont stop any thief and i may as well save that £27 and hand the bike to them. Let's face it ALL locks can be broken into. So i don't think this argument holds any water these days as all thieves need is a axel grinder and it'll be off in 30 seconds. I love my bike and is my pride and joy despite its low value it has had a couple of looks from thieves trying to figure out how to break my lock. I'm actually buying extra locks. Even today i came across a nice looking bike only locked with a combination lock this fool is asking for it to be nicked. If you don't care about your bike; that's your choice but consider that these thieves will watch your movements and will come back again to steal another from you as you keep making the same mistake, they could follow you home and break into wherever you store your bike, and if there is another bike in there BINGO!! In the end its costing the owner time and money replacing the bike and the lock. I'm looking into securing the parts on my bike with Hexlock, check it out. Do yourself a favour and secure your bike properly and stop making yourself a target!

  • @tconnolly9820
    @tconnolly9820 2 года назад

    That's what you get when you use a pretty cheap cable lock. They're not worth the price of the cardboard packaging they come in. The thief spotted that immediately. If I were leaving my bike there, I have a two metre Diamond rated chain lock and a Gold rated U Lock. And even that's no guarantee but at least the thieves are going to have to work hard to get the bike if they really want it. And it's not an expensive bike. In most cases it would probably be easier for them to cut through the fence than the locks. And even then, they'd still have to carry the bike away with the locks still attached. My chain lock and U lock together weigh in together at just under 8kg. You need to make your bike more trouble to try to steal than the other guys. As for members of the public intervening, there are set up hvideos on RUclips of people openly cutting through heavy locks in bike racks in public areas as an experiment to see how will people react and almost no one intervened. The rare braver soul that did was told by the person with the angle grinder that they lost their keys which sounds quite reasonable. There would be very few people left after that who would be prepared to take it further or risk a potentially violent confrontation.

KRYPTONITE D-Locks with combinations of Cables or Chains with the D-LOCKS... It depends where you go. I always bring my bicycle inside where I am and, if not allowed to, the folding bike usually is accepted. If that is not allowed, I either take the car or don't use the establishment. Note, I own the best locks available but only use them when traveling as I lock my bicycle inside my van to an attachment point made for this purpose. I realize, though, that not everyone is as fortunate as I am in terms of where to leave their bicycle. In that case, I'd use a "beater bike", made to look like garbage, and locked with the best locks. As long as I'm beating the cost of a car I don't worry about its eventual theft.

    Good video but I think what puts off alot of people doing the above is the fact that bike theft is so rampant its hard to relax in a pub not knowing if your means of getting home will still be there when you come out. You could get a Brompton folding bike and take it in with you but then again they cost a fortune and I can't imagine many bars allowing you to bring it in a busy environment due to health and safety etc.

    While all those comments about dark clothing and no helmet are reasonable, I think they miss the point that this is a promotional video to advertise the ease and speed and attractiveness of cycling to people who may never have considered it. And of course we all look forward to a time when Irish cities resemble their Dutch counterparts where helmets and high viz clothing is unnecessary because of proper cycling infrastructure.
